JIMC Course Prospectus

The Seminar will provide a forum for exchanging information and ideas, identifying topics of mutual interest, and examining the adaptations required for maintaining the stability of marine ecosystems, fisheries and aquaculture. The stability of the ecosystems will be linked with sustainability and seafood security.

Since 2000, the International Ocean Institute presents a Scholarship of Swiss Francs 10,000 annually for one woman from a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) involved in marine related research activities to improve her knowledge in the subject by attending specialised training or University Degree programmes. The scholarship has been established to honour the memory of the late Danielle de St. Jorre, Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Environment and Tourism of the Republic of the Seychelles and a member of the Governing Board of the International Ocean Institute, in consideration of all she did in her short life for the benefit of her country, small island developing states and the world at large.

Reefers are used to carry two main kinds of cargo: chilled or fresh produce (primarily fruits and vegetables) and frozen foods (primarily meat, fish and dairy products). In both cases, the cargo has to be pre-cooled to the optimal carrying temperature, because reefer containers are built to maintain temperatures, not to lower them. The container itself, however, should not be pre-cooled, so as to minimize interior condensation, which weakens the packing materials and hinders the functioning of the reefer unit. Also, never load cargo above the internal red line.
