First Maritime University delivers on expectations

Hon. Mr. Ishiaku Shekarau, Executive Director of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), was on a visit to Amet University, to grace the occasion of the passing out ceremony of the 5th batch of BE Marine Engineering and B.Sc Nautical Science cadets. Addressing the gathering on behalf of Mr.Temisan Omatseye, Director General of NIMASA, he said considering the huge manpower demand for seafarers at the international arena, NIMASA has launched Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) to train pool of seafarers to satisfy the meet the demand supply chain
The International Maritime Organization has developed as part of the Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation Convention, 1990 (OPRC), three courses to train First Responders, Supervisors/On-Scene Commanders and Senior Managers/Administrators to respond to marine oil spills.
17th September 2009 saw two major developments at AMET, which is India’s first Maritime University, and continues to live up to country’s expectations. 21 students, fully sponsored by NIMASA (Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency) arrived on campus to pursue their Maritime education at AMET. Mrs. Irene Macfoy, coordinating the prestigious “Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme” of NIMASA, accompanied these students to AMET. Expressing her utmost satisfaction, she confirmed that the number of students sent to AMET will grow in the years to come.
